University Libraries

Ensuring intellectual freedom, creativity, and history

The library is the principal resource for human creativity and memory in print and electronic formats. Our librarians and faculty serve student instructional needs, faculty teaching and research needs, and administrators’ information needs. Our mission includes safeguarding intellectual freedom, preserving institutional records, providing reference services, and exchanging materials at national scale.

Our Campaign Goals

Create a data science lab
Recruit scholars to lead the AI lab
Renovate spaces and expand resources and collections
Support underrepresented students through experiential learning

University Libraries Points of Distinction

Multiple Facilities for URI

We serve the needs of the University community and the general public at both the Robert L. Carothers Library and Learning Commons in Kingston and the Pell Marine Science Library at the Narragansett Bay Campus.

Quick Pivot to Address COVID-19

When front-line workers needed supplies to confront and manage COVID-19, Carothers Library converted its MakerSpace to manufacture PPE and other essential materials.

As URI quickly shifted to remote learning in the spring semester, our staff jumped into action to ensure remote access to resources and continuity of service.

World’s First Library-Based AI Lab

The AI Lab is a cross-disciplinary facility open to students, faculty, staff, and the Rhode Island community. Backed by an AI supercomputer in Tyler Hall, the lab has six specialized laptops to run large data sets and open-source software. It is the first such lab to be based in a university library, ensuring interdisciplinary access. Just some of the topics explored in the lab include robotics, wearable technology, smart cities, public policy, and ethical considerations.

Continuous Innovation

Our libraries are at the forefront of technology while also preserving historical archives. Along with the AI Lab, we continue to push the boundaries of knowledge with the Launch Lab, Think Lab, MakerSpace/VR, Instruction program, and collective options under Innovate@URI.

Our Talented Student Workers

We provide opportunity for students to apply their knowledge through practical experience through URI’s student worker program. They are talented, friendly, and hard-working allies for everyone who needs our services.
